چکیده

The nature, origin and distribution of the listed reference US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) priority pollutants; 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated in water, sediment and fish of Temsah Lake (Suez Canal, Egypt) using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The compositions of PAHs determined in all samples were measured in order to use them as chemical markers for identifying different sources of PAHs pollution in the studied region. Qualitative and quantitative distribution of PAHs detected in all investigated samples have followed no particular pattern, but rather irregular. Quantitative determination of PAHs show that their concentration ranged from 52.46–3393μg/L, 585.9-8592.8μg/L and 1696.4–4785.7μg/L for water, sediment and fish samples, respectively. Data show that these values are considered to be alarmingly high and the studied areas have values high enough to cause lethal toxicity effect to the surrounding environment and consequently to the human health. All samples are characterized by low concentration of low molecular weight PAHs compared to high molecular weight PAHs. Sediment and fish samples are characterized by relatively high concentration of six membered rings PAHs. The origin of PAHs in collected samples is either petrogenic, biogenic or mixed petrogenic and biogenic.

Heavy metals and hydrocarbon concentrations in water, sediments and tissue of Cyclope neritea from two sites in Suez Canal, Egypt and histopathological effects

Heavy metals and hydrocarbons are of the most common marine pollutants around the world. The present study aimed to assess the concentration of petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals in tissues of the snail cyclope neritea, water and sediments from two sites of the study area (Temsah lake and Suez canal) represent polluted and unpolluted sites respectively. The results showed that, the levels ...

Measurements of Natural Radioactivity Level in Black Sand and Sediment Samples of the Temsah Lake Beach in Suez Canal Region in Egypt

The level of natural radioactivity in black sand and sediment samples collected from Temsah Lake beaches of the Suez Canal district, Egypt were investigated. The natural activity concentration of Ra, U, Th and K for 20 black sand and 20 sediment samples were determined using gamma spectrometers based on HPGe detector with low background gamma-ray counting system. For assessing the environmental...

Source Assessment and Sedimentary Record of Pyrolytic Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Lake Bled (NW Slovenia)

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were determined in two sediment cores in urban Lake Bled (NW Slovenia). In surface sediments of the deep western basin, the total PAH concentration was 1150 ng g dry weight (dw), whereas in shallower, nearshore Zaka Bay the PAH concentration was 1900 ng g dw. Fourto six-ring PAH were the most abundant compounds, suggesting that most PAH in Lake Bled sedime...
